Community Service Projects

National Youth Service Day (Spring-2001)

National Youth Service Day (April 21, 2001), a program of Youth Service America, works to empower young people, highlighting their ongoing contributions to their communities and mobilizing their energy, commitment, and idealism through sustainable service. In response to National Youth Service Day, the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club, Midway College Students, and Wilderness Road Girl Scout Council will collaborate on a community service project for McConnell Springs and Raven Run facilities that are located in Fayette County. Community service is the "heartbeat of Rotary," and it is an effort to improve the quality of life in a given area. To a large extent, Rotary's reputation is built on the community service projects undertaken by Rotarians. The Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club has a three-year history of serving youth in the Central Kentucky area. more...

Annual Fishing Trip (Fall-2000)

The members of the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club and the Covington Rotary Club joined forces with five Lexington Boy Scout Troops to provide a day of fishing and fun for 50 residents from four children's homes. The Sunrise Rotary was honored in 1999 for having the best children's program of any Rotary club in this part of the United States. This was the third year for this project and the first time it has been held on Make A Difference Day, a nationally recognized day of community service.

This year's fishing trip was held at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Game Park in Frankfort on Saturday, October 28. Fifty-five Boy Scouts from the Lexington area mentored children from orphanages (ages 8-17) and taught them how to fish. The participating orphanages were the Hollon House in Georgetown, KY; The Christian Church Home for Children in Danville, KY; The Methodist Home for Children in Versailles, KY; and The Northern Kentucky Children's Home in Covington, KY. These homes care for orphans, victims of abuse or neglect and children from troubled families. Boy Scouts, Boy Scout Troop Leaders and Rotary members provided an immeasurable experience for the children. more...
